Skyline Collector Upgrade –> 3.2

PT

https://blogs.vmware.com/kb/2022/08/vmware-skyline-advisor-pro-whats-new-august-2022.html

Como o blog acima menciona,

We strongly recommend updating your Skyline Collector to v3.2 to take advantage of all the new features, as well as upcoming features in subsequent releases. If you have the Auto-Upgrade feature enabled, note that we have detected an issue with Auto-Upgrade when running Skyline Collector version 3.1.0.0.  Any Skyline Collector running v3.1.0.0 will not perform automatic upgrade to v3.2. We have identified a resolution for the issue in KB89230.  Manual upgrades will complete without incident, and all Skyline Collector versions before and future versions we release after v.3.1.0.0 are not impacted by this issue and should auto upgrade as expected. All your Collectors must be on v3.0 or above to access Skyline Advisor Pro, which is smarter, easier and 12X faster than Skyline Advisor”

With this post i would like to recommend the Skyline Collector upgrade to 3.2 version

Please check all new enhancements and functions in newest version in the link below,

https://blogs.vmware.com/kb/2022/08/vmware-skyline-advisor-pro-whats-new-august-2022.html

As our previous blog mention,

We strongly recommend updating your Skyline Collector to v3.2 to take advantage of all the new features, as well as upcoming features in subsequent releases. If you have the Auto-Upgrade feature enabled, note that we have detected an issue with Auto-Upgrade when running Skyline Collector version 3.1.0.0.  Any Skyline Collector running v3.1.0.0 will not perform automatic upgrade to v3.2. All your Collectors must be on v3.0 or above to access Skyline Advisor Pro, which is smarter, easier and 12X faster than Skyline Advisor”

I have already done it in 2 of my customers without any issue, it’s a very straight forward upgrade. Allow me to help you with that showing you how it is done:

1 – Login in Collectors UI

You will see the upgrade orange bar option for upgrade like above,

2 – Click on ‘UPGRADE’

3 – Accept the ELA, (Click ‘AGREE’)

4 – Click “UPGRADE

Then we will see the upgrade taking place, (5/10 minutes)

When it finishes you have to login again and wait more or less 15 minutes for all collectors and endpoints to start communicating as usual.

And thats all, hope that helps!

VMware Product Lifecycle Matrix

https://lifecycle.vmware.com/#/

EN

I am sure that at some point in time you already had some doubts about type and support dates for some VMware Product, well above you have the link where you can verify each and every date of support for any VMware Product (we may download this information in different formats, csv or pdf or even print it if necessary)

https://lifecycle.vmware.com/#/

In this image you can see that a filter was made in the ‘End Of General Support’ column to verify the products that are reaching this type of support within 6 months.

Also good to verify is the information update date in the top right corner.

ESXi Warning Message: ‘No coredump target has been configured. Host core dumps cannot be saved.

PT

Get-VMHost | Get-AdvancedSetting -Name UserVars.SuppressCoredumpWarning | Set-AdvancedSetting -Value 1 -Confirm:$false

EN

While i am creating my home lab with VMware vSphere 7 some errors and warnings are popping up and today I will try to show how i overcome this one specifically to core dumps on ESXi (hots). There is a way to suppress this warning, we need to change the value of a certain ’advance system setting’ called UserVars.SupperssCoredumpWarning, we can do this from ESXi (host client) or from the vCenter UI. Please be advise that i use this configuration in my homelab and this is not recommended to use in production environment where you have to follow VMware’s kb2004299, or open SR with VMware’s Support if that’s the case. Remember that core dumps partition is used to capture the output of a purple diagnostic screen in the event of an ESXi host failure.

See bellow how i suppress the warning in my homelab:

Error message:

Steps to change:

part 1/2

part 2/2

After we change the value from ‘0’ to ‘1’ the warning will dissapear.

As an alternative you can also use the following command to a certain vCenter (to all ESXi’s), no reboot needed.

Get-VMHost | Get-AdvancedSetting -Name UserVars.SuppressCoredumpWarning | Set-AdvancedSetting -Value 1 -Confirm:$false

VMware Skyline Health Diagnostic (SHD)

PT

SHD – Skyline Health Diagnostics

  1. Iniciar o deploy da appliance –> next

2 – Criar o nome da VM –> next

3 – Selecionar o datastore –> next

4 – Aceitar o license agreements –> next

5 – Escolher a rede –> next

https://communities.vmware.com/t5/Skyline-Health-Diagnostics-SHD/Skyline-Health-Diagnostics-UI-is-not-accessible-after-deploying/ta-p/2846002

Se correr bem, temos acesso a UI,

8 – Usar o user ‘shd-admin’ –> Login

9 – End user License agreement –> next

10 – Aceitamos o CEIP –> Finish

Reset Password: Onde poderemos alterar as passwords locais

ENG

SHD – Skyline Health Diagnostics

I will share a little of what think it is and what I know of an extremely useful software that can help us in the day-to-day management of VMware infrastructure. Skyline Health Diagnostics software is a self-service reactive diagnostic platform. The software helps us to detect possible issues / incompatibilities and offers solutions for vSphere and vSAN products (for now). It offers recommendations in the form of a VMware Knowledge Base article or procedure for fixing problems, based on collected logs.

To simplify as mutch as i can, it is nothing more than an appliance (and as of version 2.0.5 we will already be able to have an OVA for installation instead of the previous versions where we would have to install the OS and then the APP) installed in our infraestruture.

It should be noted that this tool from VMware is free so far.

Beneficts:

– Based on symptoms, SHD gives us a kb or steps to remedy the problem

– Being a self-service software, it reduces the time to access information that can help us solve the problem

– Quick recommendations help us have the infrastructure remedied for failures and help us ensure that the service runs with less disruption

I did the installation process in my lab in which i am passing above my experience step by step,

  1. Start the appliance deploy –> next

2 – Name the VM –> next

3 – Select the datastore –> next

4 – Accept license agreements –> next

5 – Select network –> next

6 – Additional Settings –> next

7 – Configuration resume –> Finish

After the appliance has been deployed there may be 2 scenarios, one in which it went well and we have access to the UI through the IP addr or it did not go well because there is an identified problem that could cause the UI to become unavailable or even ping the appliance’s IP.

To solve the problem mentioned above, follow the procedure below:

https://communities.vmware.com/t5/Skyline-Health-Diagnostics-SHD/Skyline-Health-Diagnostics-UI-is-not-accessible-after-deploying/ta-p/2846002

If its ok, we will have access to UI through ip addr

8 – Use ‘shd-admin’ user –> Login

9 – End user License agreement –> next

10 – Accept CEIP –> Finish

11 – Default page

There are 2 ways of analyzing Logs: Online and Offline mode(see below how to proceed each one)

Online mode:

In this mode we will have to have connection to the infrastructure (vCenter / ESXi) and internet.

login vCenter or ESXi –> Check Connection –> Run Diagnostics

Select the inventory objects –> Validate

The steps generate, download, export, validate the logs and consequent analysis start one after another by that order,

Wait for all the steps to finish and we will be able to record, or just see the generated report,

Offline mode:

In this way as there is a connection to the infrastructure (vCenter / ESXi), we will have to collect the logs manually and upload them to the app, through ‘choose file’. After this upload, the results of the reports are the same.

Report Example above,

In addition to the reports, we have some additional configurations that we can make, such as the ones I describe below as:

Upgrade and History: Where you can upgrade the appliance and the VCG (VMware Compatibility Guide) and see upgrade dates:

Customer Experience: See the internet communication status, the state of the CEIP program and see data from the CEIP program

User Management: Create/Edit local users

Reset Password: Change passwords

Proxy Settings: Internet access

Help & Support: VMware Support for the app

About: Versioning information, uptime and disk space
